Sedation

For some children, particularly those who are very young or highly anxious, dental procedures can be a challenge. In these cases, sedation can be a valuable tool because it provides a sense of relief. It is especially beneficial for children with special needs, providing a way to make dental care more comfortable and less stressful. There are numerous safe and effective medications available today that can help calm children and create a safe environment for dental care.

For older children, typically six years and up, who experience mild anxiety, conscious sedation is an option. This approach can be administered either orally or through inhalation using nitrous oxide (laughing gas). In more complex cases, where children are too young, or their anxiety levels prevent cooperation, deep sedation may be necessary. Our practice collaborates with a certified anesthesiologist for situations where a child’s safety during the procedure could be compromised. This is always discussed with the parents or guardians before treatment to ensure the best possible outcome.
